This is a song I wrote, composed and produced for not just my mama, but our mama, Kigali - Mike Kayihura
Mama and the City is Mike Kayihura’s newest release and after a long time waiting, I can honestly say it’s been worth the wait. The song, which the artist says is dedicated and appropriately so, to his mom as well as his city, Kigali, is as soulfully written as it is sang. It begins with a juxtaposition of dark imagery with evidence of love for a mother figure.
I’d slit your throat tonight, take you to her old life
Then feed her like a queen
Beneath the beautiful and light-hearted tune delivered by Kayihura, there is much depth to ‘Mama and the City’; the first layer being the unmistakable promise to his ‘mama and city’, a pledge of undying love.
I swear I’ll be there… for you and the city
For this track, Mike used his voice as the dominant instrument, with a light piano intervention mixing into his singing here and there. ‘Mama and the City’ is a simple and complete piece of art. If you haven’t listened to it already, do give it a listen below, and if you happen to be in Kigali, you’ll find that this song complements the rainy weather quite wonderfully.
